Miele makes 20 different canister and upright vacuum cleaners. With the available floor tools, accessories and other options, there are over 300 possible Miele vacuum configurations. So you can build a Miele vacuum cleaner that’s perfect for you and your home.
Sounds great, right? But I’m thinking you’re just a bit overwhelmed by all that choice. Well, I’ve got a tip for you that will make things much, much easier.
Miele Really Makes Only Five Vacuum Cleaners
Yes, there are 20 different models, but Miele doesn’t make 20 different vacuum cleaners. They make five. That’s right, all 20 models and 300-plus configurations are built off of five basic series: three canisters (the C1 Classic, C2 Compact and C3 Complete) and two uprights (U1 Dynamic and H1 Swing).
Each series has its own unique features. Within each series, unique sets of additional features or accessories create the individual models that make up the series. Keep this in mind and it’s much easier to choose the best Miele vacuum for your home or office.
The Big Decision: Upright or Canister
Both Miele uprights and canisters have the same great suction and filtration, so if you have a real preference for one or the other, stick with that style to be sure you’ll be comfortable using the vacuum.
If you have no preference or you’re otherwise unsure, follow this rule of thumb: If you have high-end carpet or mostly bare floors and area rugs, buy a canister. If you have mostly wall-to-wall cut-pile carpet, go for the upright.
Choosing a Miele Canister Vacuum
Miele’s three canister (C) series are handily numbered 1, 2 and 3. All have the same great cleaning suction and warranty, but as you move up a number (and in price), you get more features and higher quality fit and finish.
Here are the basic differences between the three series:
C1: The basic Miele vacuum with dial suction control and semi-sealed filtration with Air Clean filter. One model is available with HEPA filtration standard.
C2: Adds the following upgrades that are not available on the C1. (All models have Air Clean filtration standard.)
- Fully sealed filtration
- Thicker plastics
- Better fit and finish
- Longer cord
- Longer wand
- Quieter motor
- Crush-proof hose
- Upgraded natural bristle floor brush
- Upgraded natural bristle dusting brush
C3: Adds the following upgrades that are not available on the C2 or C1.
- Fully sealed HEPA filtration standard (HEPA optional on Cat & Dog model)
- Rubber 3-D bumper surround
- Toe tap suction adjustment
- Built in accessory storage compartment
- Available automatic suction control
- Available finger-tip suction control
- Available HEPA filter usage timer
- Available auto-stop tool rest
Choosing a Miele Upright Vacuum
I haven’t forgotten the uprights, but with two basic options, they’re pretty simple to choose from.
The Swing H1 Quickstep is a small broom model with a powerful motor and simple rug and floor brush. It’s not intended to do the job of a full-size vacuum, but is perfect for bare floors and area rugs in smaller homes or to be used as a second vacuum in a larger home. A variety of accessories are available to extend the Miele Quickstep’s utility, including an electric powerbrush for medium pile carpet and area rugs.
For a full-size, full power upright, Miele has the Dynamic U1. It handles most types of carpet and hard flooring very well, but we don’t recommend it for delicate carpet, long carpet (shag) or rough stone and tile.
As I said, it’s pretty simple to choose which Miele U1 upright is right for you, since there are only four models. All are the same basic vacuum paired with different tools, filters or suction controls:
- Twist: The basic model with Air Clean filtration.
- Jazz: Same as the Twist, and adds an LED headlight and HEPA filtration.
- Cat & Dog: Same as the Jazz, and adds odor-blocking Active Air Clean filter plus mini turbo brush.
- AutoEco: Same as the Jazz, and adds pushbutton suction control on the handle and an Automatic suction setting.
So, it’s really pretty simple to find the right Miele for your needs. Once you’ve decided on the filtration and other basic features you want, pick the series that best matches them, and pick the model with the tools you need for your flooring.
