Pet Hair Is the Ultimate Vacuum Test
Picking up visible fur is the easy part. The real test is what remains embedded in your carpet, wrapped around the brush roll and clinging to your furniture.
BVA’s pet vacuums are selected for powerful agitation, dependable suction, effective filtration and tools that actually work throughout a pet-filled home.
Picking Up Fur Is Only Half the Job
A true pet vacuum needs to tackle more than the fur you can see:
- Hair embedded deep in carpet
- Fur woven into couches and chairs
- Dander and fine dust
- Litter scattered around the box
- Pet-related odors trapped inside the vacuum
Put Your Vacuum to the Test
1. The Second-Pass Test
Vacuum one section of carpet slowly. Then go over the exact same area again in the opposite direction.
Does the second pass collect another full bin of hair?
Your first pass may be removing surface debris while leaving deeply embedded fur behind. The strongest pet vacuums combine powerful airflow with effective carpet agitation to lift hair from between the fibers.
WHAT MATTERS
A powered brush roll, proper height adjustment and strong, sustained airflow.
2. The Brush-Roll Check
Turn off and unplug your vacuum, then inspect the brush roll after cleaning.
Is it tightly wrapped in hair?
Some wrapping is normal, especially with long human or pet hair. But excessive buildup can restrict the brush roll, reduce agitation and leave you cutting away tangled hair after nearly every use.
WHAT MATTERS
An accessible or removable brush roll and a design that remains effective between maintenance sessions.
3. The Carpet-Pile Test
After vacuuming, separate the carpet fibers with your fingers and look beneath the surface.
Is fur still trapped near the base of the pile?
Many lightweight vacuums make the top of the carpet look clean without reaching the debris embedded underneath. This is especially common with dense rugs and medium- to high-pile carpeting.
WHAT MATTERS
Strong agitation, adjustable cleaning power and a floorhead designed for your carpet.

Popular doesn’t mean powerful. And “pet” in the product name doesn’t guarantee it’s built for a pet-filled home.

Allergies, Dander and Odor
For Cleaner Floors and Cleaner Exhaust Air
Pet dander is much smaller than visible fur. A vacuum needs high-quality filtration and a well-contained system to capture fine particles without allowing them to escape back into the room.
Some pet-focused vacuums also include an activated charcoal filter, which helps reduce pet odors as air passes through the machine. This can be especially valuable in homes with multiple pets, litter boxes or dogs that spend significant time outdoors.
What to Look For
- A sealed or well-contained filtration system
- High-quality exhaust filtration
- Hygienic bagged disposal
- Activated charcoal filtration for odor control
- Readily available replacement bags and filters
Our Top Picks
-
Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog

Hard Floors and Litter
For Fur Tumbleweeds, Scattered Litter and Fine Dust
The right hard-floor vacuum collects debris cleanly without scattering litter across the room or pushing fur into corners.
Our Top Picks
-
Miele Classic C1 Turbo Team
Lightweight, powerful and exceptionally effective on hardwood, tile and rugs.
-
SEBO Airbelt K2 Kombi
Compact canister performance with excellent control on hard floors and low-pile rugs.

Concerned About Pet Odors?
Look for a vacuum with activated charcoal filtration. Activated charcoal helps absorb odor molecules from the vacuum’s exhaust air instead of simply covering the smell with fragrance.
Tested in Real Homes With Real Pets
Pet Owners Notice the Difference
Marketing claims are easy. The better test is what happens when a vacuum enters a home with shedding dogs, upholstered furniture, carpeted stairs and fur that never seems to stop.
Embedded Pet Hair
We have five pets and the amount of hair in our home is out of control. We finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a quality vacuum and it has made an amazing difference. I highly recommend this vacuum if you have pets in your home.

Furniture and Stairs
I've only had the opportunity to try this once as I just received it yesterday. It is larger than my old Miele so it will take some time to maneuver. However, I love that it seems to pick up much more dog hair and I can also get underneath my low sofa with the hardware floor attachment. (I do wish there was a good way to store more of the attachments.) The bagless dirt compartment is easy to remove and clean. It is also very quiet for a vacuum and it does not scare the dogs. So far, I'm in love with this vacuum.
